Data sources

States and territories provide data on hospitals to the AIHW under the National Health Information Agreement. These data are compiled in the National Hospitals Data Collection (NHDC). The NHDC is comprised of the following databases:

  • the National Radiotherapy Waiting Times Database (NRWTD) is compiled from data supplied by the state and territory health authorities and also private providers of radiotherapy in Australia. See Radiotherapy Waiting Times Database.
  • the National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD), a compilation of episode-level records from admitted patient morbidity data collection systems in Australian hospitals. The data supplied include demographic, administrative and length of stay data, as well as data on the diagnoses of the patients, the procedures they underwent in hospital and external causes of injury and poisoning.
  • the National Non-admitted Patient Emergency Department Care Database (NNAPEDCD), which holds information on the care provided (including waiting times for care) for non-admitted patients registered for care in emergency departments in selected public hospitals.
  • the National Elective Surgery Waiting Times Data Collection (NNEWSTDC), which holds episode-level data on public and private patients added to or removed from waiting lists managed by public hospitals.
  • the National Non-admitted Patient Care (aggregate) Database (NNAP(agg)D), which holds clinic-level information on public hospital outpatient clinics including the type of outpatient clinic, counts of individual and group service events, and the principal source of funding for the service events.
  • the National Non-admitted Patient Care (episode-level) Database (NNAP(el)D), which holds episode-level data on non-admitted patients service events in public hospital outpatient clinics. This includes selected patient characteristics; the type of outpatient clinic; whether the episode was an individual or a group service event; the source of the request for service; the service delivery setting; the service delivery mode and the principal source of funding.
  • the National Public Hospital Establishments Database (NPHED), which holds information on public hospital resources at the level of the public hospital, the Local Hospital Network and the state/territory health authority. Information is included on hospital resources (including beds, staff and specialised services), revenue and recurrent expenditure.

Customised data analysis

If you are looking for statistics that are not available in publications or data cubes, we also offer a data request service [link]. Customised data analyses can be provided, subject to data quality and confidentiality requirements, from a range of AIHW-held databases. Please note that a fee may apply for this service.
