Cancer screening programs

Cancer screening programs aim to reduce illness and death resulting from cancer through an organised approach to screening. Australia has three cancer screening programs:

  • BreastScreen Australia
  • National Cervical Screening Program
  • National Bowel Cancer Screening Program

High participation in cancer screening programs is needed to reap the greatest benefits in terms of reducing illness and death from these cancers.

The latest participation data by state and territory and Australia are presented. Trends in participation are also presented from 2007–2008 for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program, and from 1996–1997 for BreastScreen Australia and the National Cervical Screening Program.
