1.02 Top reasons for hospitalisation

This measure reports on the leading causes of hospitalisation for Indigenous Australians.

Why is it important?

Rates of hospitalisation indicate the occurrence in a population of serious illnesses and conditions that require hospitalisation, and use of hospitals by people with such conditions. They are based on the number of hospital episodes rather than the number of individual people who are hospitalised. Note that rates don’t necessarily reflect the level of occurrence of an illness in the population (AHMAC 2017).
