Mortality Over Regions and Time (MORT) books

The MORT books present data for 2012–2016. Due to changes in geographic classifications over time, long-term trends are not available.

MORT books are available for the following:

Where possible, MORT books include graphical representations of age-standardised rates, premature deaths, potentially avoidable deaths and rate ratios for selected causes of death. For example:

Figure 1: Age-standardised rate of premature deaths (aged under 75), by Primary Health Network, 2016

This bar chart shows the proportion of all deaths in 2016 that were considered ‘premature’, by Primary Health Network. Premature deaths are deaths occurring among people aged under 75. The primary health networks are listed in order the order of the proportion of premature deaths. The highest ranked primary health network was Northern Sydney where 30%25 of deaths were premature and the lowest ranked primary health network was the Northern Territory (74%25). The proportion of premature deaths for Australia overall is also shown on the bar chart and is lower than around two-thirds of the primary health networks.
