The expenditure on mental health-related services interactive figures provide data on recurrent expenditure, hospital, residential, MBS and PBS expenditure by target population and year. These figures allow users to explore the data in more detail.

Figure 1 is a stacked area chart showing recurrent expenditure per capita on specialised mental health services by mental health service type for each jurisdiction from 1992–93 to 2018–19. Total expenditure on community mental health services per capita has grown from $29.93 in 1992–93 to $97.20 in 2018–19. Figure 2 is a vertical point chart showing recurrent expenditure per patient day on specialised mental health public hospital services by target population for each jurisdiction from 1998–99 to 2018–19. The Northern Territory had the highest cost of all general services in 2018–19 at $1,679 compared to $1,229 in Australia. Figure 3 is a vertical bar chart showing recurrent expenditure per care day on residential mental health services by target population and staff (24-hour or non-24-hour) for each jurisdiction from 2005–06 to 2018–19. The Australian Capital Territory had the highest average cost for general 24-hour staffing services at$792, compared to $621 in Australia. Figure 4 is a line chart showing Medicare expenditure per capita on mental health-specific services for each jurisdiction from 2000–01 to 2019–20. In Australia, psychiatrists had the highest spending per capita in all years except 2005–06 (when general practitioners had higher spending). Figure 5 is a line chart showing Medicare expenditure on mental health-specific services by provider type and  expenditure indicators including expenditure as a percentage of total MBS benefits paid, expenditure per capita, benefits paid per provider, and gross fees per provider from 2000–01 to 2019–20. Benefits paid per psychiatrist declined from $177,413 in 2000–01 to $125,493 in 2019–20. Figure 6 is a line chart showing expenditure per capita on mental health-related medications subsidised by the PBS and RPBS by prescribing practitioner for each jurisdiction from 2005–06 to 2019–20.
