The mental health services provided in emergency departments interactive figures provide data on contacts and patients by states and territories and demographic information, principal diagnoses, triage category and end status. These figures allow users to explore the data in more detail.

Interactive ED: Seven interactive figures displaying mental health-related data to 2019–20 for services provided in hospital emergency departments. Figure 1 is a map chart showing the 50th and 90th percentiles of wait times and length of stay of patients for each jurisdiction in 2019-20. In Australia, 50% of patients were seen within 20 minutes and completed their ED stay within 3 hours and 41 minutes. Figure 2 is a butterfly chart comparing the per cent of mental health-related ED presentations by principal diagnosis for each jurisdiction in 2019–20. ‘Mental or behavioural disorders due to psychoactive substance use’ was the most common diagnosis in Australia, accounting for 28.1% of mental health-related ED presentations. Figure 3 is a horizontal bar chart showing the per cent of mental health-related ED presentations assigned to each triage category for each jurisdiction in 2019-20. The most common category assigned in all jurisdictions was Urgent with 50.3% of mental health-related presentations assigned this category. Figure 4 is a horizontal bar chart showing the per cent of mental health-related ED presentations by episode end status for each jurisdiction in 2019–20. The most common end status was ‘Departed without being admitted or referred to another hospital’ with 58.1% of mental health-related presentations having this end status. Figure 5 is a series of vertical bar charts showing the per cent of mental health-related ED presentations for each time of day and day of the week for each jurisdiction in 2019–20. Presentations in Australia occurred most often between 12:00pm and 7:59pm, which is around 50% of presentations for each day. Figure 6 is a line chart showing the number, rate (per 10,000 population) and per cent of mental health-related ED presentations by triage category for each jurisdiction, from 2004–05 to 2019–20. The Northern Territory consistently had the highest rate of presentations, at 285.5 in 2019–20. The number of presentations classified as Urgent has increased from 59,524 presentations in 2004–05 to 156,234 in 2019–20. Figure 7 is a line chart showing the per cent of mental health-related ED presentations by each age group for each jurisdiction broken down from July to June 2019–20 by week. Patients aged 25–44 years consistently presented more frequently across the year in Australia, accounting for between 36.9% and 46.2% of mental health-related ED presentations.
