The COVID-19 register is an enduring linked data asset containing health data drawn from multiple sources. This latest version (2.6) now contains more than 9 million linked records, including COVID-19 data and hospitals data, along with data coverage for 7 out of the 8 states and territories.

The register provides an evidence base to guide and inform planning decisions for future pandemics.

The first version was released in December 2022, with around 250,000 linked records. In November 2023, version 2 was released, with 6 million linked records. Version 2.5, released in March 2024, included over 7 million linked records.

The COVID-19 register can be used to identify risk factors for the severity, long-term effects and re-infection of communicable disease. This information will inform policy and service planning and improve health outcomes for all Australians.

From December 2024, COVID-19 case data, spanning January 2020 to December 2022, will be integrated with the AIHW’s National Health Data Hub (NHDH) as a separate data module.

This integration will use existing infrastructure to streamline data management and reduce duplication, while also ensuring compatibility with other national data assets such as the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Person Level Integrated Data Asset (PLIDA) and the National Disability Data Asset (NDDA).

Integration of COVID-19 case data will support evidence-based policies and planning and facilitate linkage with other key data sources to support research into the future.
