Our health and welfare data holdings are substantial, including more than 150 datasets.
These essential statistical assets cover fields as diverse as housing assistance, homelessness, perinatal health, disability, cancer, hospitals and hospital activity, alcohol and other drugs, and mortality.
The AIHW is committed to providing statistical information that government agencies and the community can use to promote discussion and inform decisions on health, housing and community services.
We hold valuable data on a wide range of health and welfare topics, including expenditure, hospitals, disease, injury, mental health, ageing, homelessness, housing, disability, child protection and the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In doing so, we ensure that data privacy and confidentiality are maintained and that the requirements of the Privacy Act 1998 (Cth) and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Act 1987 (Cth) are met.
These data are used in many of the reports, bulletins, and data products (such as dynamic data displays, data cubes and SAS Visual Analytics products) available on this website. The data are also used by the community, policymakers, researchers and service providers.
The establishment of each collection was approved by the AIHW Ethics Committee. The assessment process for each collection included a comprehensive assessment of any impact on individuals’ privacy.
Some data collections cannot be made publicly available. Access to others needs special approval, which in some cases must be given by the data providers. In some instances, access is available through tables prepared by the AIHW for specific requests, (for which charges may apply).
Researcher access to these collections may be restricted due to a range of factors including but not limited to:
- conditions imposed by the AIHW Ethics Committee with respect to use of the collection
- agreements with the suppliers of data to the AIHW
- practicalities in providing access to older collections
- data quality limitations.
