This report presents Australia’s first national estimate of how many women are living with metastatic breast cancer, using national data. It uses new innovative methods developed by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) in close consultation with members of the Australian Cancer Data Alliance (ACDA). This work program responds to sector-wide advocacy and increasing demand for comprehensive national cancer data, which is a priority in the Australian Cancer Plan.
This is part of a program of work that the AIHW is undertaking in partnership with state and territory cancer registries and health departments, that aims to improve the collection of and access to information on cancer stage and recurrence. Better data supports improved clinical care, research and policy decisions for people affected by all cancers, including metastatic breast cancer.
