Strategic goal 4 – Recognised for our organisational excellence

In 2024, the AIHW became the first organisation to have its accreditation renewed as an Accredited Data Service Provider under the Data Availability and Transparency Act 2022.

The Act establishes a public sector data sharing scheme, enabling Australian Government agencies to share Commonwealth data with other government bodies and universities for clearly defined purposes, including research, policy development and service delivery.

Accreditation under this scheme requires demonstration of rigorous standards in data governance, privacy protection and workforce skills and capability. The AIHW’s renewed accreditation status confirms its position as a trusted national data custodian. This achievement was the result of coordinated work across the AIHW’s Data Governance and Integration and Business and Technology Groups. It reflects the institute’s commitment to continuous improvement, operational integrity and alignment with national data priorities.

Our history as a data linkage provider is extensive and distinguished, and we have been at the forefront of data linkage, supporting numerous health and human services research projects that have significantly contributed to public health and welfare.

The accreditation also reinforces the AIHW’s role as a strategic enabler in Australia’s data ecosystem. By embedding privacy-by-design principles and using a distributed linkage model that supports interoperability, the AIHW is helping to shape a more connected and responsive national data system.

This recognition reflects the AIHW’s leadership in providing high-quality data integration, de-identification and secure access services. It is a signal to our partners and stakeholders that we are a reliable and forward-looking institution, capable of supporting the evolving needs of health and welfare research and policy.
