Definitions of measures
Number of potentially preventable hospitalisations: Total number of potentially preventable hospitalisations for the specified condition.
Potentially preventable hospitalisation rate (crude): Number of potentially preventable hospitalisations per 1,000 population. Rates are calculated using the estimated population as of 31 December for each year.
Potentially preventable hospitalisation rate (age-standardised): Age-standardised rates are directly age standardised to the Australian estimated resident population as of 30 June 2001. Rates are expressed as potentially preventable hospitalisations per 1,000 persons for each year.
Average length of stay (days): The number of bed days divided by the number of potentially preventable hospitalisations, for each condition, rounded to one decimal place.
Cost per person: Cost for each condition, divided by the estimated population. Populations are calculated using the estimated population as of 31 December for each year.
Cost per person (age-standardised): Age-standardised costs per person are directly age standardised to the Australian estimated resident population as of 30 June 2001.
