Worldwide, vaccination is a very successful and cost-effective population health intervention. The Australian Government provides funded vaccines against 17 diseases to eligible people through the National Immunisation Program.   • Nationally, 94% of 1 and 5 year olds, and 90.5% of 2 year olds, were fully immunised in 2017

  • Several vaccine-preventable diseases are now rare in Australia as a result of high immunisation rates

  • More than 12,000 cases of whooping cough were notified to public health authorities in 2017
