This report presents demographic and labour force statistics on the medical profession in Australia. It is based on the main findings of the 2001 national survey of registered medical practitioners. Information presented in this report includes the number of registered practitioners in each geographic region and in each state and territory, their age and sex profiles, areas of practice, medical specialties and hours worked. The report also includes comparisons with the medical profession five years earlier using data from the 1996 national survey of registered medical practitioners.
Significant changes were made to the survey design in 2000. Data from the 1997 to 1999 surveys have been revised to enable time series comparisons.
Aug 2005 - New table added.
