Across all age groups, COVID-19 case fatality rates were lower among people who were vaccinated
This section reports COVID-19 case fatality rates by vaccination status during the Omicron period (to 31 December 2022).
Across all age groups, case fatality rates were lowest in people who had received 2 to 3 COVID-19 vaccination doses (Figure 9). For example, for people aged 60 and over, the case fatality rate was substantially reduced from 3.1% (unvaccinated) to 0.8% and 0.4% (for those who were vaccinated with 2 or 3 doses, respectively). This is a 73% reduction in case fatality rates.
Figure 9: Deaths due to COVID-19 (number and case fatality rate) by number of COVID-19 vaccine doses or time since last vaccination dose prior to diagnosis and age group, up to 31 December 2022
Bar charts show COVID-19 case fatality rate by age group and number of vaccine doses prior to diagnosis. Confidence intervals are represented by black lines. Menu options are available to view number or percentage for the disaggregation.
Notes:
- Deaths due to COVID-19 include those that occurred after a reported COVID-19 diagnosis, regardless of time period, or up to 21 days prior to diagnosis.
- See Technical notes for details on cause of death information sources, the definition of people who died from COVID-19, and how the number of COVID-19 vaccine doses are determined.
Case fatality rates were highest for those aged 70 and over where their last COVID-19 vaccination dose were 6 or more months prior. For those aged 80–89, the case fatality rate was 2.1% for more than 6 months compared to 1.5% for 4–6 months (Figure 9).

Remoteness area and socioeconomic groups
Focusing on people aged 60 and over (the age group at greatest risk from COVID-19), there were significantly lower case fatality rates across all remoteness areas and socioeconomic groups for people vaccinated with 2 or more doses compared to unvaccinated people (Figure 10) (see Data table S26).
