Description of data source | The NHDH is a major national de-identified linked data system that draws together core government administrative health and aged care datasets. It is an integral resource in the Australian health landscape and contributes widely to an array of government programs. |
Definition of disability | The NHDH uses the National Disability Data Asset (NDDA) first-generation disability indicators to classify whether a person has a disability. These indicators were developed through the NDDA and include Australians who accessed disability-related government payments and services between 2020–21 to 2021–22. These indicators use data from Data Over Multiple Individual Occurrences (DOMINO) and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The indicator describes the population of people who accessed a disability-specific support at the end of a month. Per month or quarter, the indicator captures individuals who are:
The indicators reflect people who have a significant and permanent disability and would benefit from support services. This indicator will under-represent people where the disability would have not applied for these supports or are otherwise ineligible for the support listed above. Notes
- Data from Western Australia (WA) and the Northern Territory (NT) are excluded from all analyses using the NHDH.
- In this report, sex/gender was derived from the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) and the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). A small number of records have sex other than male or female but have been suppressed for confidentiality reasons.
- Only public hospital data was included in this analysis.
