The AIHW Disease expenditure database includes ‘well care’.
Well care includes the following 7 sub-categories:
- well person (includes expenditure for services that are typically routine examinations, general examinations without specific complaints or diagnoses, or administrative in nature)
- routine dental (includes routine checkups and cleaning)
- pregnancy and postpartum care
- family planning
- counselling services
- social services (includes problems related to housing and economic circumstances, social environment, support groups)
- donor.
In 2023–24 $13.9 billion was spent on well care (8% of total spending). This was up from $13.2 billion in 2022–23.
The two components of well care that account for the majority of the spending are routine dental ($6.6 billion) and pregnancy and postpartum care ($4.7 billion). In 2023–24, these two sub-components accounted for $11.3 billion (81% of well care). Note: In AIHW disease expenditure reports released prior to 2024, pregnancy and postpartum care was included in reproductive and maternal conditions.
