Benzathine benzylpenicillin G delivery and acute rheumatic fever recurrence rates in New South Wales

Secondary prophylaxis data are provided in New South Wales only if an individual consents to be included. Due to the COVID‑19 pandemic, New South Wales was not able to consistently follow-up with all providers of secondary prophylaxis in 2021 and 2022, so adherence in those years may be under-reported.

In 2024, 40% (60) of First Nations people with RHD and/or a history of ARF consented to being included (Supplementary table 5.6a), 50 of whom should have been receiving BPG. Of these, 32 (64%) patients did not receive any BPG, 13 (26%) patients received 1% to 79% of their prescribed doses, and 5 (10%) patients received 80% or more of their prescribed doses (Supplementary table 5.6b).

Because the number of cases available for analysis in this scenario is too small, it is difficult to draw meaningful conclusions from the results of the ARF recurrent rate per 100 patient-years analysis.
