This report presents information on the youth detention population in Australia from June 2019 to June 2023. Among the 812 young people in detention on an average night in the June quarter 2023, most were male (89%), aged 14–17 (80%) and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) (59%). Over the 4-year period, the number of young people in detention fluctuated across quarters, though fell overall from 941 in the June quarter 2019.
