Publications

The Clearinghouse publications provide an overview of the influences on social and emotional wellbeing, mental health and suicide rates among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the programs implemented to address these factors. Publications written by external authors represent the views of those authors.

From July 2021 to June 2025, 32 Clearinghouse publications were released. Summary papers are also available for most of these publications.

Flourishing in later life: promoting older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ mental health and suicide prevention

Indigenous evaluation: best practices for social and emotional wellbeing and suicide prevention

It highlights best practices, challenges, and the need for culturally safe, community-led approaches. Emphasising Indigenous governance and data sovereignty, it calls for evaluations that are empowering, independent, and grounded in lived experience.

Preventing suicides of First Nations people

Chronic physical health conditions and the mental health and wellbeing of First Nations people

Harmful alcohol and other drug use and its implications for suicide risk and prevention for First Nations people: a companion paper

This paper synthesises research on alcohol and other drug (AOD)-related harms and suicide risk among First Nations communities. It examines their co-occurrence, relationship and potential points of intervention and reviews existing policy and practice responses. The paper notes that systems level approaches are needed, with self-determination, community ownership, accountability and long-term investment.

Harmful use of alcohol and other drugs and its relationship with the mental health and wellbeing of First Nations people: a review of the key issues, policy and practice approaches

Patient experiences of integrated services for chronic disease and social and emotional wellbeing
