Alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults in small geographic areas (SA2) of selected Australian states

The rate of alcohol outlets for an area is a useful measure for comparing areas with different sized populations. It combines the number of alcohol outlets in an area and the number of adults in the same area. The data in these maps are presented for both Capital city areas and Non-capital city areas.

Rates should be used with caution and in combination with other measures for areas with very low populations. A low number of outlets may still result in a high rate per 1,000 adults even though there may not be 1,000 adults living in the area. For this reason, areas with populations of less than 250 adults are excluded from the summary statistics presented below (86 SA2s, including 25 with zero population). These SA2 are still included in the maps and supplementary tables. Selecting an area on the map will provide further details about the area (See Data tables table S5).

How to use these maps

MAP 2: Rate of alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults in each small geographic area (SA2), selected Australian states, 2018 will open in a new tab.

Use the zoom and search functions to explore the map. Select a group or area of interest from the lists to show that group or area. Click on an area in the map to view additional information. The colour shading indicates different rates of alcohol outlets per area, with darker shades indicating a higher rate.

Rate of outlets by area in selected Australian states, 2018

For small geographic areas (SA2) included in this report:

  • On average there are 2.6 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults living in an area.
  • The rate ranges from 0 to 39 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • The median (middle) is 1.8 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • Small geographic areas (SA2) with more than 20 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults are more likely to be in Capital city areas than Non-capital city areas – this includes all Capital city central business district areas except Perth in WA.
  • There are some large inland Non-capital city areas with high numbers of alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults. These areas are very large areas and have widely distributed populations and town centres where alcohol outlets are located. It is important to consider the local context of areas when making comparisons (See Data tables Tables 4 and 5).

Rate of outlets for Capital city areas in selected Australian states, 2018

  • On average there are 2.0 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults living in Capital city areas.
  • The rate ranges from 0 to 39 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • The median (middle) is 1.3 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • The areas with rates greater than 20 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults includes all Capital city central business district areas (except Perth, WA), along with other adjacent city areas (for example, Fortitude Valley in Brisbane, Qld and Fitzroy in Melbourne, Vic) where there are many businesses to support the people and businesses in the Capital city central business district area (See Data tables Tables 4 and 5).

Rate of outlets for Non-capital city areas in selected Australian states, 2018

  • On average there are 3.4 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults living in Non-capital city areas.
  • The rate ranges from 0 to 30 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • The median (middle) is 2.7 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults.
  • Similar to Capital city areas, the areas with rates greater than 20 alcohol outlets per 1,000 adults in Non-capital city areas include regional centres (Launceston in Tas, Mackay in Qld, Cairns City in Qld and Rockhampton City in Qld) (See Data tables Tables 4 and 5).
