Australian Burden of Disease Study 2015: fatal burden preliminary estimates

Years of life lost (YLL) has also been estimated by socioeconomic group at the national level for the years 2011 and 2015.

In the analysis, socioeconomic groups are based on an index of relative socioeconomic disadvantage defined by the area in which a person lives. The index is determined by factors such as household income, employment and education level.

Socioeconomic group are presented as quintiles. Quintile 1 (Q1) represents the 20% of the population with the lowest socioeconomic characteristic. The level of socioeconomic positions increases with each quintile, through to the 20% of the population with the highest socioeconomic characteristics (Q5).

Use the interactive graphs to explore the number or rate of YLL in Australia across socioeconomic group for selected disease groups in 2011 or 2015 for males, females or persons.

Note that the 2015 data by socioeconomic group is preliminary and excludes deaths that were registered in 2016 due to  missing statistical level area (SA) 2 information at the time of writing. The data will be updated in the final release of burden of disease estimates from the Australian Burden of Disease Study 2015 (expected early 2019).
