Other services

Estimated total spending on other health related services in 2022–23 was $18.6 billion. Of this:

  • $7.0 billion was spent on administration
  • $6.0 billion on patient transport services
  • $5.6 billion on aids and appliances (Table A6).

Overall:

  • non-government entities contributed $7.6 billion
  • state and territory governments $6.4 billion
  • Australian Government $4.6 billion (Figure 29).

The line graph shows that spending on other services by Australian Government, state and territory government and non-government sector over the decade to 2022–23. Non-government spending increased from $6.0 billion in 2012–13 to $7.0 billion in 2018–19, then fluctuated between $6.7 billion and $7.6 billion from 2019–20 to 2022–23. Australian Government spending increased lightly from $3.3 billion in 2012–13 to $4.6 billion in 2022-23. State and territory government spending increased every year was $2.9 billion in 2012–13 compared to $6.4 billion in 2022–23.

Non-government spending increased from $6.0 billion in 2012–13 to $7.0 billion in 2018–19, then fluctuated between $6.7 billion and $7.6 billion from 2019–20 to 2022–23. Australian Government spending increased lightly from $3.3 billion in 2012–13 to $4.6 billion in 2022-23. State and territory government spending increased every year was $2.9 billion in 2012–13 compared to $6.4 billion in 2022–23.

Compared with 2021–22, spending on other services increased in real terms by $1.3 billion (7.4%) in 2022–23. This growth was attributable mainly to an increase in spending by state and territory governments of $500 million (8.5%) and non-government entities’ spending increased by about $450 million (6.3%). The Australian Government spending increased by about $300 million (7.7%).

In the decade since 2012–13, the real average annual growth rate on other services was 4.3%.
