In October 2015, the Australian Government released the Implementation Plan for the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2013–2023. The Implementation Plan outlines the actions to be taken by the Australian Government, the Aboriginal community controlled health sector, and other key stakeholders to give effect to the vision, principles, priorities, and strategies of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Plan 2013–2023.
The Implementation Plan has set goals to be achieved by 2023 for 20 indicators. These goals were developed to complement the existing COAG Closing the Gap targets, and focus on prevention and early intervention across the life course.
This December 2020 update provides new data for all of the 20 goals. Among the goals, 11 are on track to be met, and 9 are not on track. Of the goals which are on track to be met, 2 relate to antenatal care, 4 to immunisation coverage, 1 to health tests for people with diabetes and 4 to smoking rates.
Data for the goals relating to Indigenous health checks cover the first 6 months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia. For an initial analysis of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on goals relating to Indigenous health checks (goals 4, 8, 13, 14 and 15), see Impacts of COVID-19 on Indigenous-specific health checks. Future updates of this web report will present data, where available, spanning the COVID-19 period and will consider the potential impacts of the pandemic on the status of the goals.
