Population groups

Suicide and self-harm can affect people across the lifespan, and of different races, ethnicities, sexual orientations and occupations. However, a number of groups are particularly important to examine in-depth because their risk of suicide or self-harm is higher than that of other populations, the impact on the community is different or they have specific requirements for culturally appropriate suicide prevention or postvention services.

Understanding differences in numbers and rates of suicide, intentional self-harm and suicidal behaviours in these populations is essential for more effective suicide prevention.
