Demonstrating the utility of the COVID-19 Register

National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) and Australian Institute of Health and Welfare

COVID-19 is thought to result in longer-term impacts on health however there is limited evidence on the patterns of healthcare resource utilisation following a COVID-19 diagnosis, and how this might differ by population groups. This project demonstrates the utility of the cross-jurisdictional COVID-19 Register. It explores potential analyses which could be conducted on the data using a subset of linked cases (based on the first version of the COVID-19 Register from 5 participating jurisdictions). This includes exploring demographic patterns, health outcomes following COVID 19 and health system use before and after a COVID 19 diagnosis.

This initial web-report was published in September 2023.

2Hospitalisations and deaths following COVID-19, 2020–2022: a linked data analysis
National Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS) and Australian Institute of Health and WelfareAs a follow-up to the initial web-report published in September 2023, this project aims to use the most recent data (with expanded coverage of cases from January 2020 to December 2022 from 7 participating jurisdictions) from the COVID-19 Register to provide greater insights into the impact of COVID-19 on the health of the Australian population and the health system. This project aims to look at trends in COVID-19 infections, describing the COVID-19 study population by population subgroups (based on demographic and geographic profile), including COVID-19 antiviral use. It also covers health outcomes (including hospitalisations and deaths) following a COVID-19 diagnosis by population subgroups and vaccination status.2024Complete
3Health and mortality outcomes for people living with dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic in AustraliaAustralian Institute of Health and Welfare

This project aims to explore the direct and indirect impact of COVID-19 on people living with dementia in Australia. The purpose is to use COVID-19 register data to better understand the factors associated with adverse outcomes for people living with dementia during the COVID-19 pandemic, in order to contribute to planning and preparedness strategies for future outbreak and pandemic scenarios.

4Estimating COVID-19 health and aged care related expenditure and service utilisationAustralian Institute of Health and WelfareThis project aims to estimate expenditure associated with positive cases of COVID-19 in Australia. It will also look at patterns of health and aged care service use and medications dispensed in the 4 weeks following a COVID-19 diagnosis (acute cases) and the health and aged care service use and medications dispensed for long COVID cases (includes ongoing symptomatic COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 syndrome), compared to a relevant period prior to diagnosis.2023In progress
5Post-acute COVID-19 Outcomes StudyNational Centre for Immunisation Research and Surveillance (NCIRS)To inform government priority in health services planning in Australia, this project aims to comprehensively evaluate the risk of some long-term health outcomes following COVID-19 infection (including but not limited to cardiovascular, chronic lung diseases and metabolic morbidity that has been purported to occur following COVID-19 infection) and quantify how vaccination and antiviral treatments may alter the clinical course.2023In progress
6The epidemiology of COVID-19 in community-dwelling older adults – examining the impact of COVID-19 in older adults receiving Home Care services in Australia
Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
In Australia, measures to mitigate and prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 within older age groups have focused primarily on adults living in residential long-term care. Consequently, little is known about the effect of the pandemic on community-dwelling older adults receiving aged care services within their own home. Using the COVID-19 Register, this project aims to describe COVID-19 case notification rates, mortality rates and vaccination status in community-dwelling older adults receiving a Home Care Package. In addition, patterns of Emergency Department use, Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) claims, and hospital admissions for COVID-19 cases will be calculated. Providing such robust epidemiological data will inform planning and preparedness strategies to increase community resilience to future waves of COVID-19, future respiratory pandemics and current endemic respiratory viruses including influenza.
