Philanthropic and charitable donations, both time and money, can be valuable to both those who receive donations and those who make them.
This report focuses on financial giving, presenting an overview of the Australian system and amount donated by individuals, business and philanthropists.
In December 2020, there were approximately 58,600 registered charities in Australia
In 2018–19, the total amount claimed by individual taxpayers for donations to charity was $3.9 billion
In 2018–19 there was $43 million in employee donations through workplace giving programs
Total donations to the 2019–20 bushfires and COVID-19 pandemic are not yet known as these appeals are ongoing
Philanthropic and charitable donations can be valuable to both those who receive donations and those who make them.
However, there are challenges in measuring precisely how much is donated annually due to the fact that philanthropy and giving occurs in many ways, and there are numerous mechanisms through which money and/or time can be given.
This report focuses on financial giving, presenting information from a range of sources that reflect the many complex philanthropic structures in place. The reported measures of monetary donations relate primarily to the amounts given by Australians and Australian businesses to Australian charities.
