Trachoma treatment coverage

Measure 3.8.1: The number and proportion of community members who were treated in communities where active trachoma was identified.

The screening and treatment frequency for trachoma in at-risk communities is based on the trachoma prevalence rate.

  • In 2017, in communities where active trachoma was identified, a total of 9,158 community members received treatment, a rate of 82%. This included 952 children aged 0–4 (86%), 1,378 aged 5–9 (93%), 1,142 aged 10–14 (88%) and 5,686 community members aged 15 and over (78%).
  • Between 2011 and 2017, the proportion of community members who received treatment in communities where active trachoma was identified rose from 65% to 90% in 2014, before declining to 82% in 2017.
  • Trachoma treatment strategies were applied in 74 communities. Treatment was delivered to active cases and households in 28 communities and to the whole of the community in 43 communities.
