What is being tracked?

Measure: Personal and community support workers are disability confident and respond positively to people with disability

The Strategy was set to see the following tracked – proportion of personal and community support workers who are disability confident and respond positively to people with disability. Measure wording has been revised to clarify its intent.

This measure is part of the Key sector attitudes to people with disability priority of the Strategy. This priority is about supporting more positive attitudes towards people with disability by workers in the key sectors.

The desired outcome is that personal and community support workers have more positive attitudes towards people with disability.

Do personal and community support workers' attitudes towards people with disability vary between states and territories?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of responses from personal and community support workers (aged 18 and over) that were positive on being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, grouped by Australian states and territories. In 2022, 88% of responses from personal and community support workers in Tasmania were positive about being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, as were 74% of responses from personal and community support workers in Western Australia.

  • Do personal and community support workers' attitudes towards people with disability vary for First Nations and non-Indigenous personal and community support workers?

    The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of responses from personal and community support workers (aged 18 and over) that were positive on being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, by Indigenous status. In 2022, 90% of responses from First Nations personal and community support workers were positive about being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, as were 79% of responses from non-Indigenous personal and community support workers (please note that the proportion for the First Nations group has a high margin of error and should be used with caution).

In 2022, 81% of responses from male personal and community support workers were positive about being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, as were 78% of responses from female personal and community support workers, and 68% of responses from personal and community support workers whose gender was recorded as 'Non-binary/Other' (please note that the proportion for 'Non-binary/Other' gender category has a high margin of error and should be used with caution).

    The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of responses from personal and community support workers (aged 18 and over) that were positive on being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, by sexual orientation. In 2022, 79% of responses from personal and community support workers who were straight (heterosexual) were positive about being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability, as were 78% of responses from personal and community support workers whose sexual orientation was gay, lesbian, bisexual, or other.

Data on personal and community support workers being disability confident and responding positively to people with disability come from the Australia’s Disability Strategy Survey – Share with us, collected for the first time in 2022 on behalf of the Department of Social Services.
