Admitted patient activity over time
This section presents analysis of average daily hospitalisations (presented by month of admission) over 5 years (2020–21 to 2024–25) to highlight the change in seasonal hospitalisations and the impact of COVID-19 on hospitalisations.

Hospital admissions
This line graph shows hospital admissions between 2018–19 and 2022–23. Data is presented by average daily admissions (by week), cumulative admissions (by week), projected vs actual daily admissions (by month) and urgency category. National, state and territory data is available.
Hospitalisations data in the National Hospital Morbidity Database are captured and reported for separations that are completed within the reporting year (for example, 2024–25); for some records, the admission for that hospitalisation will have occurred in the previous reporting period (for example, 2023–24). While most analysis and reporting from the database is based on completed separations, the data presented on this page is effectively limited to hospitalisations that ended in the reporting period. This will tend to underestimate the number of hospitalisations, particularly at the end of the reporting period because the available database does not include data about patients for which the episode of care had begun but had not yet ended.
