Aged care
The following pages present statistics and information on:
The AIHW estimate that most people with dementia live in the community (66%, see Prevalence of dementia for more information).
People with dementia are often able to continue to live independently through the support of carers, family and friends, as well as community-based aged care services.
It is important to bear in mind that the presence of dementia is not identified in all community-based aged care service data, which limits our ability to understand the use and need for these services by people living with dementia.
For the underlying data presented in these pages, refer to the Aged care data tables.
For more information on aged care used by people with dementia among different population groups, see:
- Aged care service use by First Nations people with dementia

See Carers: findings from the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers for information about carers of people living with dementia in the community.
See Support services for information about services and initiatives for dementia in Australia that are provided by the Australian Government, state governments and non-governmental organisations.
