This measure is part of the Emergency responses priority of the Strategy. This priority is about improving emergency service responses for people with disability.

The desired outcome is that more people with disability are happy with their access to emergency services.

Types of services

What proportions of people with disability were satisfied with the accessibility of disaster preparedness and response information, and emergency services?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of people with disability (aged 18 and over) who were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services. In 2024, 90% of people with disability were satisfied with the accessibility of information to prepare for disasters and emergencies (such as bushfires, cyclones, or floods), and 85% were satisfied with the accessibility of emergency services (such as ambulance, police, or fire). Overall, 86% of people with disability were satisfied with the accessibility of disaster and emergency information and/or emergency services.

State and territory

Does the proportion of people with disability satisfied with the accessibility of emergency services and disaster preparedness and response information vary between states and territories?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of people with disability (aged 18 and over) who were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services, grouped by Australian states and territories. In 2024, 93% of people with disability in South Australia and 83% in New South Wales were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services.

    The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of people with disability (aged 18 and over) who were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services, by Indigenous status. In 2024, 76% of First Nations people with disability and 87% of non-Indigenous people with disability were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services (please note that the proportion for the First Nations group has a high margin of error and should be used with caution).

In 2024, 82% of people with severe or profound disability were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services, compared with 88% of people with milder forms of disability.

In 2024, 88% of people with disability whose highest education was Year 12 or a bachelor degree or higher were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services, as were 84% of people with disability who completed a certificate or diploma.

In 2024, 87% of straight (heterosexual) people with disability were satisfied with accessibility of disaster preparedness information and emergency services, as were 83% of people with disability whose sexual orientation was gay, lesbian, bisexual, or other.

Data on whether people with disability are satisfied with the ease of finding disaster preparedness and response information and/or with the accessibility of emergency services come from the Australia’s Disability Strategy Survey collected on behalf of the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing.
