Cardiovascular disease dashboards

The term cardiovascular disease (CVD) encompasses the many different conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels. The main cause of CVD is the build-up of abnormal deposits of fat, cholesterol and other substances in the inner lining of the arteries. CVD is largely preventable and is often associated with lifestyle factors such as smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, poor diet and harmful alcohol consumption.

Heart stroke and vascular disease

Heart, stroke and vascular disease (HSVD) is a subset of CVD including the most common and serious types of CVD: coronary heart diseases (CHD) (angina, heart attack and other heart diseases)—also known as ischaemic heart disease—cerebrovascular diseases (including stroke), oedema, heart failure and diseases of the arteries, arterioles and capillaries.

HSVD is reported in the prevalence dashboards (aligning with ABS National Health Survey publications and data). The broader definition (all CVD) is reported in the hospitalisation and deaths dashboards.
