Conditions arising during hospitalisation

Overall, 14.5% of patients in the cohort had at least one health condition that arose during their hospitalisation.  This percentage varied by TBI diagnosis, ranging from 2.8% for Principal diagnosis–Concussion cases to 51% for Additional diagnosis – Non-concussive TBI cases. The Additional diagnosis – Non-concussive TBI diagnosis group were most likely to have an additional TBI condition arising during hospitalisation – this happened to 27% of those patients, but only 2.5% of the total cohort.

In total, 13,736 conditions were reported as arising during the initial TBI admission. For patients who had at least one condition arise during the admission, an average of 4.1 conditions were recorded as arising during the admission. About 4.5% of conditions arising during the index admission were intracranial injuries. Figure 16 shows the top 5 arising conditions reported during the initial TBI hospitalisation (see also Table S9).

Figure 16: Top 5 conditions arising during initial TBI hospitalisations for cohort patients

This column graph shows that the top 5 conditions arising during initial TBI hospitalisation were other disorders of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance (832), complications of procedures not elsewhere classified (637), TBIs other than the initial TBI(s) (615), hypotension (462) and heartbeat abnormalities (394).

1. TBI (S06) conditions arising during initial hospitalisation were in addition to the TBI(s) diagnosed on admission.
2ICD-10-AM codes used were: Other disorders of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance (E87), Complications of procedures, not elsewhere classified (T81), TBI (S06), Hypotension (I95), Abnormalities of heart beat (R00).

Most of the cohort (89%; 20,804) ended their stay in hospital by being discharged home or to a residential aged care facility. The remainder of the cohort were either transferred to another hospital for further care (5.6%; 1,316), died during the initial TBI hospital admission (1.7%; 396) or were discharged under other conditions (4.0%; 929).
