Health service use for patients with traumatic brain injury

Of the 23,445 patients in the cohort, almost 400 (1.7%) died during the initial TBI hospitalisation (Figure 17; Table S10), however this does not necessarily mean TBI was the cause of death. The diagnosis group with the highest percentage of deaths during initial TBI hospitalisation was the group with a principal diagnosis of traumatic subarachnoid haemorrhage – 6.4% (73) of those patients died in hospital. The group with the lowest percentage of deaths during initial TBI hospitalisation was the group with a principal diagnosis of concussion – only 0.1% (10) of people with a concussive injury as a principal diagnosis died during the initial hospitalisation.
