What is being tracked?

Measure: Proportion of Australian Public Service employees with disability

The Strategy would like to see the following tracked – proportion of public sector employees with disability. Available data do not currently allow reporting on the wider public sector.

This measure is part of the Economic independence priority of the Strategy. This priority is about supporting people with disability to earn enough money to live well, plan for their future and have choice and control over their own lives.

The desired outcome is that more people with disability are able to work in public service jobs.

Has the proportion of Australian Public Service employees with disability changed over time?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of Australian Public Service (APS) employees (aged 15 and over) who have disability. Biannual data from June 2011 to June 2023 are used. In June 2023, 5.1% of APS employees had disability, compared with 3.5% in June 2011.

Does the proportion of Australian Public Service employees with disability vary between states and territories?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of Australian Public Service (APS) employees (aged 15 and over) who have disability, grouped by Australian states and territories. In June 2023, 6.6% of APS employees in Tasmania had disability, compared with 4.4% in the Northern Territory.

    The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of Australian Public Service (APS) employees (aged 15 and over) who have disability, by Indigenous status. In June 2023, 8.7% of First Nations APS employees had disability, compared with 5.6% of the non-Indigenous employees.

    The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of Australian Public Service (APS) employees (aged 15 and over) who have disability, for males and females. In June 2023, 4.8% of male APS employees had disability, and 5.3% of female employees.

In June 2023, 4.0% of APS employees from CALD backgrounds had disability, compared with 6.4% of employees in the non-CALD group.
