What is being tracked?

Measure: Proportion of households with at least one person with disability in lowest 40% income whose housing costs exceed 30% of household income

This measure is part of the Housing affordability/stress priority of the Strategy. This priority is about improving access to affordable housing for people with disability.

The desired outcome is that fewer low-income households that include people with disability experience housing stress.

Has the proportion of lower income households with disability experiencing housing stress decreased over time?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of low-income households with at least one person with disability whose housing costs exceed 30% of household income. Data from 2013–14 to 2019–20 are used. In 2019–20, 18% of low-income households with at least one person with disability were in housing stress, and 21% in 2013–14.

State and territory

Does the proportion of lower income households with disability experiencing housing stress vary between states and territories?

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of low-income households with at least one person with disability whose housing costs exceed 30% of household income, grouped by Australian states and territories. In 2019–20, 20% of low-income households in Queensland were in housing stress, compared with 14% in Victoria.

Remoteness

The data in the graph and the table below show the proportion of low-income households with at least one person with disability whose housing costs exceed 30% of household income, grouped by remoteness. In 2019–20, 19% of low-income households in major cities were in housing stress, compared with 14% in outer regional and remote areas.
