Breaches of FDV-related violence orders recorded by police

Technical specifications for National Plan Outcomes

Attributes

Sub-outcome

4.3 People who choose to use violence are held to account through police and justice system, with services and systems working together to actively identify and manage risk.

Indicator

Increased coordination and accountability across police and justice systems for people who use violence.

Measure

Rates of breaches of FDV-related violence orders recorded by police.

Interpretation

A decrease in the rate of offenders who breach violence orders may show that violence orders are an effective mechanism for managing risk.
However, changes in offender rates over time can be influenced by greater detection, or more reporting to police. The data from this measure should be considered alongside prevalence rates for family and domestic violence.

Computation description

Rates are calculated per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over for the same reference period.

The number of offenders of FDV-related breach of violence and non-violence orders is a count of all persons who were proceeded against at least once for this offence when the action was flagged as FDV-related by police or identified as occurring within a specified family or domestic relationship during the reference period.
This measure is expressed as the number of offenders per 100,000 people aged 10 years and over based on the estimated population for the same time period.

Computation

100,000 × (Numerator/Denominator)

Disaggregation

For each financial year, nationally, by:

  • state and territory
  • sex
  • age.
Notes

Caution is advised when comparing across jurisdictions as there are differences in definitions as well as other factors.
Data on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander status are not available for offenders in Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania.
Due to different counting methods, the number of offenders of FDV-related breach of violence and non-violence orders in this measure may be higher than the number of FDV offenders with a principal FDV offence type of breach of violence and non-violence orders.
