Diabetes dashboard
The diabetes dashboard allows you to view statistics about people who reported having diabetes and hospitalisations for diabetes during pregnancy.
Step 1: Select a dashboard page from the buttons at the top (for example, overview, regional comparison).
Step 2: Select a topic to view statistics on (self-reported diabetes, diabetes in pregnancy).
Step 3: Select filter options to change statistics presented (urban area, statistic).
Data for this dashboard are from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing (Census) for 2021, and the National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD) for 2019–20 to 2023–24 (5-years combined years).
Census data are for the people who reported they had diabetes as a long-term condition; this information is self-reported.
NHMD data for diabetes in pregnancy count episodes of care where diabetes in pregnancy was the principal diagnosis (the main condition causing the hospital admission). Each hospital admission where diabetes in pregnancy is recorded counts as one episode. If a woman is admitted multiple times during pregnancy (for example, for complications), each admission is counted separately. Therefore, the numbers presented do not reflect the total number of individual women with diabetes in pregnancy.
NHMD rates are presented per 1,000 population. Crude rates have been made available for First Nations people only, to avoid direct comparisons. For First Nations and non-Indigenous comparisons, where age-specific rates are not available, refer to age-standardised rates.
The diabetes dashboard presents ABS Census data for urban areas (based on Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA)) and their contributing Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4) and Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3) regions. NHMD data is available for GCCSA regions. National and state and territory data are also presented.

The dashboard presents data on people living with diabetes and with diabetes in pregnancy in urban Australia. Data are presented by sex and age, with regional and Indigenous status comparison.
