Hospitalisations dashboard
The hospitalisations dashboard allows you to view statistics about reason for hospitalisation, leading causes of hospitalisation, admission details like patient election status and care type, potentially preventable hospitalisations and chronic conditions.
Step 1: Select a dashboard page from the buttons at the top (for example, overview, regional comparison).
Step 2: Select a topic to view statistics on (hospitalisations, cause, potentially preventable hospitalisations (PPH)).
Step 3: Select filter options to change statistics presented (urban area, statistic).
Data for this dashboard are from the National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD) for 2019–20 to 2023–24 (including 5-years combined).
NHMD data count episodes of care (hospital admissions) for admitted patients. Each hospital admission counts as one episode of care. If a person is admitted multiple times for the same or different conditions, each admission is counted separately. Therefore, the numbers presented do not reflect the total number of individual patients.
NHMD rates are presented per 1,000 population. Crude rates have been made available for First Nations people only, to avoid direct comparisons. For comparisons between First Nations and non-Indigenous populations where age-specific rates are not available, refer to age-standardised rates.
The hospitalisations dashboard presents data for urban areas (based on Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA)) and their contributing Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4) and Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3) regions. National and state and territory data are also presented.

The dashboard presents data on hospitalisations in urban Australia, covering total hospitalisations and characteristics, cause and PPH, with regional, time trend and Indigenous status comparison.
