Diabetes
Diabetes (self-reported)
Measures
- Number of people by whether they had diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes).
- Proportion of people by whether they had diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes).
Diabetes status categories
- Has diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes)
- Does not have diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes).
Available by
- Indigenous status: First Nations, non-Indigenous.
- Age group: 0–14, 15–24, 25–34, 35–44, 45–54, 55–64, 65 and over, all ages.
- Sex: males, females, persons.
Data period
Census night (10 August) 2021
Data source
Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Census of Population and Housing (Census) (ABS 2022).
Region types
Main structure: Australia, states and territories, Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA), Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4), Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3).
Data for GCCSA, SA4 and SA3 are presented for ‘urban areas’ only.
Suppression
Data have been suppressed if the denominator for the percentage was less than 100, due to concerns about the reliability of percentages based on small denominators.
Notes
- Whether has diabetes (excluding gestational diabetes) (HDIAP) data is derived from responses to the long-term health conditions question: ‘has the person been told by a doctor or nurse that they have any of these long-term health conditions?’.
- This was a new question for the 2021 ABS Census of Population and Housing.
- The Census Health question does not distinguish between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, this variable will include respondents reporting both forms of diabetes.
- Data have been randomly adjusted by the ABS to protect confidentiality. No reliance should be placed on small numbers.

Hospitalisations
Measures
- Number of hospitalisations among females who had a principal diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy.
- Crude rate (per 1,000) of hospitalisations among females who had a principal diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy.
- Age-standardised rate (per 1,000) of hospitalisations among females who had a principal diagnosis of diabetes during pregnancy.
Principal diagnosis categories
- Pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy (O240 – O241)
- Diabetes arising in pregnancy (O244)
- Total diabetes in pregnancy (O24).
Available by
- Age group: 15–24, 25–49, 50 and over, all ages.
- Indigenous status: First Nations, non-Indigenous.
Data period
2019–20 to 2023–24 (combined years).
Data source
AIHW analysis of National Hospital Morbidity Database (NHMD).
Region types
Main structure: Australia, states and territories, Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA).
Data for GCCSA are presented for ‘urban areas’ only.
Suppression
- Data have been suppressed to protect confidentiality when the number of hospitalisation episodes is less than 5, including the use of consequential suppression to prevent back-calculation.
- Data have been suppressed due to concerns about data volatility:
- for crude rates when the denominator is less than 100.
- for age-standardised rates when the total number of hospitalisations across all ages is less than 20 or when the denominator in any age group is less than 30.
Notes
- Data are based on usual residence of the patient – not on location of the hospital.
- Except for the Australian Capital Territory, data at the GCCSA level were aggregated from Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2s) by truncating the digits of the SA2 codes. For the Australian Capital Territory, the state and GCCSA data were identical as they pertained to the same geographic boundary.
- For the denominator in the rates, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population estimates were modelled by the AIHW using ABS population estimates and projections (series B) based on the 2021 Census. Population estimates for non-Indigenous Australians were derived by subtracting Indigenous population estimates from the total Australian estimated resident population.
- Age-standardised rates were calculated using five-year age groups up to 75+ and the 2001 Australian standard population.
- Hospitalisations with the care types “newborn with unqualified days only” (7.3), “organ procurement - posthumous” (9) or “hospital boarder” (10) were excluded from the analysis.
- Hospitalisations where Indigenous status was not stated (code 9) were excluded from the analysis.
- Hospitalisations where the first five digits of SA2 codes were 10702 or 12402 were excluded from the analysis.
- Hospitalisations with a principal diagnosis of dialysis (ICD-10 code Z49) were excluded from the analysis.
- Principal diagnosis for the NHMD is coded using ICD-10 codes. Hospitalisations for diabetes in pregnancy presented in the diabetes dashboard include the following:
- Diabetes arising in pregnancy
- Pre-existing diabetes mellitus, type 1, in pregnancy (ICD-10 code O24.0)
- Pre-existing diabetes mellitus, type 2, in pregnancy (ICD-10 code O24.1)
- Pre-existing diabetes in pregnancy
- Diabetes mellitus arising in pregnancy, or gestational diabetes (ICD-10 code O24.4)
- Total diabetes in pregnancy
- Covers all forms of diabetes mellitus in pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (includes other and unspecified pre-existing diabetes mellitus in pregnancy (ICD-10 code O24).
- Diabetes arising in pregnancy
