Mortality dashboard
The mortality dashboard allows you to view statistics about leading causes of deaths, median age at death and potentially avoidable deaths.
Step 1: Select a dashboard page from the buttons at the top (for example, overview, regional comparison).
Step 2: Select a topic to view statistics on (mortality, cause of death, infant deaths).
Step 3: Select filter options to change statistics presented (urban area, statistic).
Data for this dashboard are from the National Mortality Database (NMD) for 2019 to 2023 (including 5-years combined years), and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Births, Australia for 2019 to 2023.
NMD data count deaths registered in Australia, including the underlying cause of death. Each death is counted once.
Mortality rates are presented per 100,000 population. Crude rates have been made available for First Nations people only, to avoid direct comparisons. For comparisons between First Nations and non-Indigenous populations where age-specific rates are not available, refer to age-standardised rates.
Mortality rates (crude and age-standardised) reported for 2019–2023 are reported for the 5 jurisdictions (New South Wales, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory) where the quality of Indigenous status identification in deaths data is considered adequate. National mortality rates for this period are therefore reported for these 5 jurisdictions combined.
The mortality dashboard presents data for urban areas (based on Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSA)) and their contributing Statistical Area Level 4 (SA4) and Statistical Area Level 3 (SA3) regions. Births data are available for GCCSA regions. National and state and territory data are also presented.
Figure 5: Mortality dashboard
The dashboard presents data on deaths in urban Australia, covering all-cause mortality, leading causes of death and infant deaths, with regional, time trend and Indigenous status comparison.
