Indicator 1: Seclusion rate

Description: The number of seclusion events per 1,000 patient days within public sector acute admitted patient specialised mental health service units.

The national seclusion rate (events per 1,000 patient days) more than halved from 16 in 2008-09 to 5 in 2023–24. This is real change in how services used seclusion.

Indicator 2: Restraint rate

Description: The number of restraint events per 1,000 patient days within public sector acute admitted patient specialised mental health service units.

The mechanical restraint rate is relatively low, with a national rate of 2 events per 1,000 bed days in 2015–16 and less than 1 in 2023–24. The national physical restraint rate has been steady between 9 to 12 events per 1,000 bed days since 2015–16.
