Safety & quality

Safety and quality are important in all areas of the health system. A safe and high-quality health system provides the most appropriate and best-value care, while keeping patients safe from preventable harm. Data are available that can be used to measure aspects of safety and quality in the Australian mental health care system.

Consumer outcomes in mental health care

In 2023–24 on average, patients had a higher rate of clinical improvement during admitted hospital care compared with other settings.

Experiences of care

Patient-reported experience measures (PREMs) collect patients’ views about their experience of health services they received and the impact or outcomes of those services.

Consumer experience in public mental health services

Patient experience in private hospital mental health services

Involuntary treatment in public mental health care

In 2023–24, 50% of hospitalisations in mental health care were for people receiving involuntary treatment in acute (short-term care) units and 27% of non-acute hospitalisations.

Seclusion & restraint

The national seclusion rate has more than halved from 2009–10 to 2024–25.
