Indicator 1: Population access to clinical mental health care
Description: The proportion of the population who:
- received one or more services from a state/territory public specialised mental health service.
- received specialist psychiatric care in participating private hospitals with psychiatric beds.
- received Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) or Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) subsidised mental health services.
The proportion of the population receiving public services mental health care and private hospital care has remained stable, with 2% of the population receiving care from public services and 0.1% from private hospitals.
Indicator 2: Mental health new client index
Description: The percentage of new clients:
- under the care of public sector specialised mental health services. New clients are those who have not been seen in the five years preceding the first contact with a public sector specialised mental health service in the reference period.
- receiving Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) subsidised mental health services. New clients are those who have not previously used an MBS mental health item in the five years preceding the first use of an MBS mental health item in the reference period.
The percentage of new clients in public sector specialised mental health services has been stable over time, ranging from 40% to 43% at the national level across all years of data.
