Alcohol consumption

The following data visualisation shows:

  • alcohol consumption risk type by age group (percent), 2001 to 2019, nationally and in each state and territory
  • alcohol drinking status by age group (percent), 2001 to 2019, nationally and in each state and territory.

This figure shows that in 2019, 24% of Australians aged 14 and over abstained from alcohol, while 25% exceeded the single occasion risk guidelines and 16.8% exceeded the lifetime risk guidelines for alcohol. The proportion of people abstaining from alcohol has increased over time, while the proportion of people exceeding lifetime or single occasion risk guidelines has declined.
