This collection includes de-identified COVID-19 case content data collected through the National Notifiable Disease Surveillance System (NNDSS) held by the then Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) between January 2020 and December 2022. The NNDSS data were received by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare under a project-based ethics approval granted by the AIHW Ethics Committee (EO2021/2/1232: Towards an Australian COVID-19 Register and linked data set) and are currently held by the AIHW in the COVID-19 Register and linked data asset (the Register). Variables include content information on COVID-19 infections such as case diagnosis date, lab diagnosis method, key demographic information and additional medical-related characteristics

Information on COVID-19 cases are sourced from participating states and territories as well as the Australian Government’s National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, and a number of other administrative data sources.
