The National Health Data Hub (NHDH), formerly the National Integrated Health Services Information (NIHSI) analytical asset, is a major national health data linkage system for health research and analysis. 

The NHDH comprises de-identified and enduring health data from State and Territory and Commonwealth data sources. It brings together data on admitted patient care services (in public and private hospitals), emergency department services and outpatient services in public hospitals for all states and territories with the exception of Western Australia and the Northern Territory.

The NHDH also includes data from the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (RPBS), Residential Aged Care services data, National Death Index (NDI), the Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) data, the National Disability Insurance Scheme data and the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) data.

There are restrictions and limitations governing the availability or use of other data in this holding.

Data scope 

The scope of the collections includes:

  • Persons registered on the Medicare Enrolment file with service records reported from 1 July 2010 (see below).
  • MBS Services in Australia from 1 July 2010 to the latest year of included in the collection.
  • PBS and RPBS claims and under co-payment data for all PBS/RPBS prescriptions supplied from 1 July 2010 to the latest year.
  • APC for public and private hospitals (where available), ED and NAP care data from participating states and territories from 1 July 2010 to the latest year included. 
  • Australian government-funded aged care programs and assessment data from the National Aged Care Data Clearinghouse (NACDC) from 1 July 2010 to the latest year
  • Australian immunisation register data from 1 July 2010 to the latest year 
  • All deaths registered in Australia from 1 July 2010 to the latest year.
  • National Disability Insurance Scheme dataset (NDIS) from 1 July 2017 to the latest year.
  • Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society (ANZICS) from 1 January 1997 to the latest year.
