Screening HPV test positivity by HPV vaccination status

Screening HPV test positivity is the proportion of valid screening HPV tests that detect oncogenic HPV – either oncogenic HPV 16/18 or oncogenic HPV (not 16/18).

The year 2022 was used to calculate screening HPV test positivity, as this was the latest available year in the linked dataset. As this was a year with relatively high screening HPV test positivity due to a high proportion of screeners in that year being under-screened or never-screened, these results may differ in future when years in which under-screeners and never-screeners make up a lower proportion of participants.

Screening HPV test positivity was calculated separately for HPV tests that were positive for oncogenic HPV 16/18 and those that were positive for oncogenic HPV (not 16/18), as the majority of participants would have only received the HPV vaccine that includes 16 and 18, and not the other oncogenic HPV types.

In 2022, it can be observed that screening HPV test positivity of oncogenic HPV 16/18 was lower for partially vaccinated and fully vaccinated participants than unvaccinated participants for all age groups from <25 to 40–45 (Table HPV vaccination 1). This is true irrespective of the age at which participants commenced vaccination.

Conversely, in 2022, screening HPV test positivity of oncogenic HPV (not 16/18) was not lower for partially vaccinated or fully vaccinated participants compared with unvaccinated participants (Table HPV vaccination 2). Again, no consideration was given to the age at which participants commenced vaccination.
